Tết Festival – Việtnamese Lunar New Year Celebration

Tết or Vietnamese Lunar New Year is the most important Vietnamese festival of the year. It is the Vietnamese New Year marking the arrival of spring based on the Lunar calendar.

Since our early days of settlement in Western Australia, the Vietnamese Community had organised the Tet celebration annually.

Traditionally, the Vietnamese people take an entire week to celebrate Tết. It is the time for family reunions, commemoration of ancestors, harmony and exchange of best wishes, special food, new clothes, new beginnings and other festive activities. The few days at the start of the year are the most important days. All activities are undertaken with great care to ensure that people will have happiness, good fortune and longevity throughout the year. Tết is also an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions. During Tết, Vietnamese visit their relatives and temples, forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hoping for a better upcoming year.

For the past few years, with the support of the City of Wanneroo, the Tet Festivals were held at Wanneroo Showgrounds (Cnr Wanneroo Rd & Ariti Avenue).

We believed that this vibrant and colourful cultural celebration will contributes and enriches the cultural diversity of Western Australia. It is more than just a celebration by Vietnamese Australians of the Lunar New Year. It is an opportunity for the Vietnamese Community in WA to share our cultural heritage with the wider Australian community and to promote greater cultural understanding and tolerance within our multicultural society. People from all ethnic backgrounds attend the Festival each year to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
