Since ancient history, China has made several attempts to invade Vietnam, and in fact did occupy Vietnam on and off for hundreds of years. But the Vietnamese people have always managed to drive the Chinese aggressors out of the country and regained independence.

In recent time, due to the Vietnamese Communist government’s pusillanimity and subservience, China has seized a significant area of land in its southern border with Vietnam and a large portion of sea in the Gulf of Northern Vietnam, through unfair treaties signed between the two Communist governments in the late 90’s. The Vietnamese Australian community regards that as an act of betrayal by the Vietnamese Communist regime, and an aggressive deed by the Communist Chinese clique.

By claiming an unreasonable large U-shaped area covering most of the sea east of Vietnam, China has disregarded the international rules stated in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to which it was a signatory.

Carrying out its expansionist intention, China used force to occupy the Paracel archipelago in 1974 and several islands and atolls of  the Spratly archipelago in 1988, both were historically proven beyond doubt to belong to Vietnam.

More recently, Chinese has intensified its illegal activities in the disputed waters, with its patrol vessels frequently halted Vietnamese fishing boats and detained Vietnamese fishermen. Last month, Chinese patrol boats harassed and severed cables of a Vietnamese ship conducting seismic surveys on continental shelf within Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone off  its southern coast.

China’s belligerent and chauvinistic behaviour in Vietnam’s East Sea severely threatens peace and stability in the region, of which Australia is an important stake holder.

The Vietnamese Community in Australia, representing 250,000 Vietnamese Australians, is going to organise a peaceful rally in front of the Chinese Embassy at 15 Coronation Dr, Yarralumla, Canberra, at 2.30PM on Saturday 09 July 2011, to protest against China’s expansionism and demand that China immediately halt its aggressive acts against Vietnam’s territories. The rally is expected to be attended by several thousands Vietnamese Australians from all over Australia.

We invite members of the media in Canberra to come and join us in our Rally. For further information, please contact Mr Phong Nguyen (tel 0411 756 52), Mr Thanh Nguyen (tel 0404 059 117) or Mr Cong Le (tel 0437 046 542).
